It was some year back, when articles directories used to be considered as an authentic and reliable source for building quality links. There was a time, when articles content links were not only highly prominent, but they were also considered as a backbone of link building. But not now, as Matt Cutts, the head of Google Search Engine, has put a final halt to building links on articles.

“Over time article directories have gotten a little bit of a worse name. So just refresh everybody’s memory, an article directory is basically where you write 3-, 4-, 500 words of content and then you’ll include a little bio or some information about you at the bottom of the article, and you might have three links with keyword rich anchor text at the bottom of that article. Article directories are not much in vogue now. It Is due to enormous contents posts on different popular directories for free. For instance, go, Ezine articles, Sooper articles, Articles Rich and Hub spot, etc.

I have analyzed some core reasons why article directories finally put to death:

Bulk Content Posting

Google always put core stress on “Less is good”. This means your content must be good with less posts. Article directories have become spoiled because of accepting bulky amount of posts by marketers.

An author used to post his multiple contents at a single time. At least, three to four 500 words posts were very common. This unethical approach was used by many people to publish irrelevant posts on content directories only to be banned by search engines.

Low Quality or  Spammy Content

Due to massive publishing, many low quality spam contents also become the part of these directories. This severely damaged the reputation of quality and genuine contents.

As a result, all published contents are now being filtered combining both good and bad ones. The Low quality content means “An article which gives not much value and interest to readers”. Due to sheer abundance of these low quality and worthless posts search engine giant has to put a strict ban on article posting.

Anchor-text Rich Keyword Links

These are the links which appear in the author bio in every article directory. Google always prohibits excessive link marketing in SEO. These were only web promotional links for the sole purpose of marketing. The authors used to put good number of anchor-text rich keywords links in their bio.

Article Spinning

It has been a very popular tactic of link builders to spin the same content all around different sites. This technique discourages the original, new and genuinely written content and their makers. Article spinning is a very much defamed and notorious practice in SEO.

Duplicate Content

Duplicate Content has really become a nuisance for Google to take up a mission of filtering away all copied contents by authors on different directories. Content Duplicity means” To exactly or word to word publish someone else’s content on article sites”

Article Rewriting

Article Rewriting is a technique used commonly to Paraphrase content which cannot be caught by search engine due to re-transformation from the original source. There are various tools available online which can transform the content into almost like new. This leaves no trace for search engine to find it anywhere. It is also something that degrades genuine content writers.
